Lawmakers send measure to governor to weaken Todd Stroger veto power
Chicago Tribune - Chicago,IL,USA
SPRINGFIELD --- The Illinois Senate today sent the governor a bill that would make it easier to override the veto power of Cook County Board President Todd Stroger.
That's been a key issue as county commissioners have tried and failed to repeal Stroger's penny-on-the-dollar sales tax increase.
The state legislation would reduce the margin required to override a veto from four-fifths to three-fifths. The county board has 17 commissioners, so the number of commissioners needed to override a veto would fall from 14 to 11.
The state Senate voted 48-1, with eight senators voting present. The measure now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn.
